Default Does Matt Medium Make an Effective Varnish...

As the title states I am wondering if matt (or for that matter gloss, semigloss, etc...) sprayed or brushed on a finished figure makes an effective varnish. For some reason I am having a heck of a time finding brushable or airbrushable varnish locally but lots of matt medium. Being winter and having a cranky wife I am banned from my usual Testors Dullcote. I did brush some on an old repainted prepainted mini and it certainly made the finish matt but I can't help but wonder if there is any real protection value (or even if I am imagining results on such a cheap material).

    Thank you kindly,
    Michel

Sorry, no. Matte medium just does not have the protective features of proper varnish.

For protection you want a good tough gloss coat anyway. The matte finish put over it is for aesthetics more than protection.

Matte finishes will always be more porous and vulnerable than gloss finishes.
