Thread: What triggers moral/panic tests?

    Default What triggers moral/panic tests?

Can you please clarify as we have a difference of opinion at our club. One view is that anything which causes wounds triggers a Panic /Moral Test, the other is that the only events which would trigger a test are:

    - Events such as Cersei or the Crown
    - The defender takes wounds if attacked by charge/melee/missile fire
    - Tactics cards such as "Last stand" which cause wounds as this is an attack action
    - Orders such as "Set for Charge" which cause wounds as this is an attack action

So, do any of the following trigger a test?

    - a unit takes wounds after moving over stakes
    - an attacker unit takes wounds from Jamie Lannisters "Counter attack"
    - an attacker takes wounds from Tywin Lannisters "Exploit weakess" tactics card
    - Jamie Lannister - Maimed Hostage - causes wounds on the unit it is with

    Any others?

    Many thanks.

The only "auto-triggers" is at the end of an attack resolution, see page 19, and when you fail a charge, see pg 19. In other words, every time you get attacked you make a test at the end of it, you auto pass if you dont take wounds, and every time you fail a charge. Every other time is when specifically worded, such as the crown zone on the tactics board. So no to all four of your last situations.

To help in your thought process for your club.

Taking "wounds" is NOT what causes panic tests. Rather, it is when the rules explicitly state that a unit will make a panic test that a panic test does occur.

Out of the rulebook, that includes both receiving an attack action (regardless of wounds taken or not) and failed charge attempts. Beyond the rulebook, there are also certain cards that will instruct to make a panic check (again, with zero regard to any wounds received).

    Hope that helps.

To clarify, are you saying that you’d take a panic test at the end of an attack even when wounds are NOT dealt? If so, please reference the below excerpt:

Defender Makes Panic Test: Once Wounds have been dealt, the defender then makes a Panic Test (see Panic Tests, pg. 20). If the defender did not suffer any Wounds from the attack (by either blocking all incoming Hits, or if the attacker simply missed with all their dice), they do not need to roll. They automatically pass this Panic Test. (It is important to note, however, that they still count as having taken the test, even if they automatically pass, as various Abilities or effects might trigger off of this!)

Yes, TheGrinningWolf, that is exactly what I'm saying.

And the reference that you give is the exact description why. To excerpt your excerpt: "It is important to note, however, that they still count as having taken the test".

Ie. You get attacked, you do NOT take any wounds, you take the panic test, and you DON'T roll for it as you automatically pass that test. (You may now trigger anything that triggers based on a passed panic test, like Lannister Supremacy, or more generally a passed moral test, such as Jon Snow's healing)

    Thanks all for your thoughts.

    Yelraek - that's a really good point which I hadn't thought of.
