I've got a couple of updates from my progress during the last few days, but I'm going to be breaking these up into several different posts just so it's not a wall of text and pictures:

I worked some more on my lava mage, adding on some earth texture to simulate streams of debris dislodged by and caught up in the jets of lava, and then painted those with some primer.

Anyone have suggestions for how to paint those streams of lava without the use of an airbrush? (mine's broken atm)

After applying the earth texture paint, prior to priming it:

I've also made some progress on my phoenix lady - specifically I followed gorb's suggestion on which parts to highlight yellow and which to highlight white, and then I started on something of a custom base as well. I'd like for her to be standing in the middle of a blast crater of her own making, and the modpodged cardboard ring is a kind of a starting point for that crater.

Edit: sometime between my last phoenix lady update and now, her ponytail broke off at the halfway point! I'll have to break out my milliput sometime to craft her a new one.

On the Dwarf, I would probably mix some white in with the purple (until it is pretty much white with a purplish tint) to highlight the really high points on the cloak/cape. For shading I would probably do either black or maybe mix a little blue in with the black to get the really deep spots on the cloak (or the purple bit because it looks like there is some on the front as well)

Really nice start on the Lava mage, this should be really cool all painted up! And that cloak is looking really nice on the Phoenix one.

Thanks for the compliments, BAM, Clouds, Eki and Bullfrog!

And thank you for the feedback on the dwarf, Eki. It's been a busy month so far, and I've been focusing a bit more on terrain to take a break from minis and on an Infinity squad for an upcoming game.

Speaking of, feedback on the following is definitely welcome!

Here's a couple of minis from my Infinity squad so far. I'm trying to go for muddy base, like they're wading through a battlefield that's been churned up and pulverized. Mod podge and then dry brushing seems to be giving okay results, but something seems off. Seems like it doesn't quite evoke mud right off the bat. Any suggestions, let me know.

And then here's my current progress on my lava mage. The jets are coming along nicely, and I plan to up the intensity and brightness of the yellow at the base of the jets to where it's almost blinding white, and I plan to push the tips of the spray closer to spray, and I plan to further define the waves around the rocks on which the mage is standing.

And then this is the current status of the phoenix mage. Currently making a base that looks like she made a crater when she conjured this phoenix:

Sorry to hear about the hair breaking on your phoenix figure. I don't think the mud looks that bad made just add some extras like bits of razor wire, a gun, some wood to simulate blown up trees or something to match the aesthetic you are going for will help bring it out a little more. Also not sure by the photo, but if you have some still water or something similar to make some small puddles (not sure if you already did that or if it is just gloss on the bases).
That Fire Mage is looking amazing! Great work on the fire wave or whatever you are calling that! And nice work on the crater for the phoenix mage basing!

    Nice nice nice.
All your projects are coming along nicely.
The mud look right to me, maybe adding some details about a battelfield as suggested by @ekipage ?

The lava effect start to look fantastic. You'll need to paint some OSL on the mini again I believe....

And I'm curious about the pheonix base, I'm looking forward to see how it goes.

Thanks for the compliments, ekipage! I'll have to look more into adding some extras to the bases. I do agree, I think it would look super cool to do so. And on one of my minis I tried out some still water, but it looked about the same as the gloss from the mod podge that I used on the others, so I didn't pursue that anymore.

Thanks for the compliments on the mages! I've had to put them on hold while I've been working on my Infinity dudes, but I'm looking forward to getting back to them.

Thanks, Coyotebreaks! I think color shifts/gradients have been my favorite thing about miniature painting so far. So many possibilities for what you can do.

Thanks, mousekiller! It's been really fun to imagine what I'd like all of these to look like and then think about how to achieve that.

Appreciate it, Dexter! Yeah, I'll try out the bits/details ekipage suggested. I definitely agree with having to paint on some OSL to the mini on the lava base. And you and I are both curious about the phoenix base haha. It'll definitely be cool to see it come along.

Btw, here's the latest progress on my Infinity squad. Been blocking in colors, working with the gradients and shading on the tabbard-type cloths, trying out some different ideas for helmet visors/armor lighting, etc.

(Apologies for the orientation of the pics - have to fix that for next time)

Nice squad! I like the dark color theme, makes me think of some old knights with guns, I love it. I'm looking forward to see how it goes.

Thanks Dexter! Glad to know the knights with guns theme is coming through.

What do you think about the visors being painted as though they're being lit by a bright, cold blue light, like the last couple of pictures?

I like that it conveys the futuristic armor, but I'm afraid it pushes the mini too far away from the knight feel.

Your bases are so dynamic. I like how you go right in with these huge environmental effects, really makes use of the scale effectively.

I think the knights are cool either way. Maybe a chance to do more object source lighting though if they're illuminated?
