Please, for the love of god, paint a deceent figure or two! Those are quite shocking pieces. You're a good painter but I feel the figures let your work down.

I kind of agree, really I know you're doing them up to get a bit of cash, but the frustrating thing about these ones are the real contrast between some parts which are actually painted really nicely (I know these were done quickly, but you're still fantastic at painting faces ), and the parts which let them down (the metallics are a bit too basic for my liking - even for table-top).
Sorry for being harsh Meg, but we all know you're a good painter and I think we all want to see you do a few special ones from time to time
Trust me guys this is not what I want to be painting but my display pieces aren't selling or aren't selling for enough for me to justify it. I couldn't even sell a display piece starting at $49.99 but I sold a table top piece for $51. So it's more practical for me to spend my time cranking out play pieces that people will buy. And it's not just a bit of cash I have to come up with, it's my living I have to make by painting. I have a display mini that I need to post. I had to do some touch ups after taking photos of her so now I need to do a new round of photos.
Trust me guys I don't expect to be getting rave reviews on these. It's more just getting them out there for people to see and bid on. I need to be able to keep my roof over my head and food on the table and right now . . . that's just about not happening. I don't even know if I'll be able to make my mortgage payment this month or next.
If I didn't have to worry about money so much right now then I'd continue to paint display pieces. As it is y'all probably won't see much display stuff from me unless they are commissions because I will be starting to work on competition entries when I'm on break for school. I will continue to paint better pieces because I need to keep my sanity. I have a tableau that is half done right now. I need to get it finished. But I can only justify doing that when I've got stuff to hoc on ebay.
As it is, the one display piece I did last week took me all of last week when I wasn't studying. I seem to find myself running out of time during the week; art school takes up a lot of time.
Now if y'all want to be kind enough to donate to the starving artist fund for Meg Maples I may be able to afford to do more display stuff
I'll post a GOOD mini this weekend though. Never fear.

ahh ok. Sorry I misunderstood. Yeah they aren't some of the best minis but with Reaper launching their new version warlord I figure warlord figures are a good bet to go with at the moment. they will appeal to both general gamers and warlord gamers.

Another vote for painting better quality sculpts. Your time and talent is wasted on some of the crap you paint
wow! some of you guys are harsh! These are nice pieces in thier own right, i would give an arm to be able to do something like these (and i still like that dwarf, Reaper or not!)
I appreciate the conversation has moved on from talking about these specimens though, but the artist does have a good point. Display stuff is not selling as it once was, but there are still the same amount of gamers out there? (unless the credit crunch has stopped them gaming??)

a big part of selling your work is painting the right piece...
If you need some money I think painting GW or Privateer Press miniatures, similar to the box art, is not a bad way to go. There will be a lot of potential customers. Go for your crisp and clean work and if you haven't tried them, use the new Citadel washes on metallics for a quick but still nice effect.
I think these miniatures are good for the time spent. There are one or two things I really like with each miniatures, something that makes me want to buy them. The base in the first, the face in the two others, the hair on the last. The only thing that stands out as not really that good are the metals. So I'll repeat my tip of using washes.
Well guys I guess my question would be what constitutes a good sculpt? It seems like no matter what I choose to paint someone doesn't like the mini. I mean this question seriously too. I'd really like to know what constitutes a good mini, a good sculpt.
I know plenty of people who don't like GW because their sculpts aren't that good. Then there are those out there who tell you that's all you should paint.
I know people who don't like Werner's stuff at all and then there are people who LOVE his stuff, like me.
Some people don't like Kraken, some do.
Some don't like Privateer and some do.
So, how does one determine what constitutes a good mini when so many different tastes exist?
I paint a lot of reaper because well I used to paint for them and I have a ton of their metal. Plus they are 2 miles down the road from me. It's easily accessible and inexpensive. Buying anyone else is about 2 times more expensive because of the drive or shipping and the cost of the mini.
Personally I don't see anything wrong with the sculpts above. The dwarf is just goofy! The eyes are huge, the stance is funny, it's just a silly mini.
I also don't want to do a 2 hour paint job on a really nice mini. That's just sacrilege!
I know a lot of people have said they wish I would paint anything other than reaper but then when I post that stuff I still get comments about why people don't like the sculpt. From my perspective it seems like personal preference.
I guess there are two types of "good minis": those that are truly great looking sculpts, and those that sell well.
I have no idea what sells well on eBay, but I do know that recent outputs by GW seem to sell well regardless of the sculpting quality. I would think Reaper minis are harder to sell and may not sell for as much.
Great looking sculpts (where neither GW or Reaper qualifies, IMO) are probably harder to sell unless you are really good, and possibly a bit known, as well.

maybe people are just intimidated by a girl who can paint, and are lookin' for any excuse to slag you off...
of course, being a girl, you will be compared to Jen, Marike, Natalia, and Amy...
Amy Brehm tried hard to step up her game to Marike's level, and it paid off with a few medals at Gerona last year...
you need to improve your metals, for sure...
most of all, stop telling people that you only spent 2 hours on a mini, or they will just think that your mini is worth $10-$20...
call 'em quickies instead...
what people like will always be so subjective (i'm a big fan of the Klockenbooty, but he sure does sculpt some ugly faces)...
i use the gallery here as a market research tool...
seeing what sold, and for how much, and what it scored, makes for a rough guide to what's in demand...
it's not hard to see what scored well thanks to a popular mini...
basically, if you see a mini score high 7's, and sold on ebay, and you know you could paint a better version, than paint one up...
there is a feeling like, "i really should paint something different to what everyone else is doing", which i have myself, but being unique doesn't pay the bills...
as ritual said, the latest release from GW will sell...
every other company's minis will be hit and miss...
Definitely agree with Jah. GW sells nicely, whether you like painting them or not. Added to that is the fact that you can get just as much painting up a plastic figure nicely, as you would a similar figure in metal. My shonky maths suggests that it's a rather profitable way to do things if you need the money.
I don't do vast amounts in the way of commission work myself, but when I do I'm always staggered by the amount of money folk will pay for something in a fairly by-the-book 'EM style. Thus, my hobby becomes a self-fulfilling one, and the circle of paint-life goes on and on
