Introduction

The term “stripping miniatures” refers to a cleaning process so viciously meticulous that the miniature comes out of the chemical bath without a trace of paint.

At least, this is the theory. Personally, I tried everything for a few of my Good minis gone Bad.
Meet Juju, my Repentant Wolfen.

Juju had a bit of a history. After he was first primed, he sat in the rain for three days before he was rescued. A good Samaritan tried to salvage the ruined primed surface by giving him another coat. Somehow he ended up being primed a third time, and I started a gray basecoat before realizing that it was wasted effort and tossed him in the stripper. As he stands in this image, Juju has just come from three months in a Pine-Sol bath.

Pine-Sol and the many other chemical mediums used for stripping have not been successful for me. By chance, I stumbled on “Klean-Strip Brush Cleaner and Conditioner”, which I purchased in Home Depot for slightly less than $6. The product is advertised as being completely biodegradable and gentle on everything except paint. You cannot miss it – The bottle is neon green.

Great review, the company link unfortunaly takes you to a site that does not contain this particular product but a whole bunch of other strippers, Still no idea where to get it in the UK

I cannot find this product, but did find the Brush Cleaner, and it does not work as well for me.

Must try this - Recently used thinner on some minis and it turned the bases into salt water taffy. Must try on plastic...

Thanks so much for the information!
I use HOPPE’S Famous No.9 GUN CLEANER. You can buy it at Walmart or any gun shop. It works pretty much in the same way, but takes a couple hours. If you do try it, be careful not to use it on old miniatures (it dissolves lead) and don't leave the mini in it for longer than a day.

Thanks for sharing this with us! I have been looking for something that worked better than paint thinner and acetone. Very well written and full of important info on the product!

I'm currently testing this stuff on some Ralidium based minis (old Ral Partha) I got "second hand". I'm not sure what kind of paint the previous owners tried using, but after 4 days sitting in the Clean Strip, they still have a ways to go before they are ready. The paint is still gobbed on in even some of the smoothest parts of the mini (not recessed, but right on the surface)

This stuff is amazing. i was impatiant so i took an old tooth brush to the minis as well. wow. paint came off in a day! WARNING!!! not all Klean strip is good for plastics. the stuff i used i was a little curiouse so i threw in an extra IG arm. it pretty much ate it away. looks kinda cool to me. kinda like an acid thigy got to it. but try to keep klean-strip to your metals.

Just used this stuff to strip a bunch of Space Marine equipment I wanted to repaint. Totally removed everything from 3 land speeders, 1 razorback and a couple scenery pieces in about 1 hour total time. Took off the paint and even the primer better than anything I had used before, even in the little nooks and cranny's. No harm to the plastic that I could notice either. Thanks for the info!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
This stuff is the best. Works better than any other method I have ever used. Thanks for finding it.

I wonder if the darkening of metal miniatures you observed is tarnishing, or if it implies that some of the solvent has penetrated a porous layer of the metal. That might mean that, in the long term, some solvent is still present that may degrade the new paint job.

Nive job.
Make sure you use gloves though as this stuff WILL eat the skin off your hands. I used it and a toothbrush with no gloves and my hand looked like I had some weird skin disease the next day.

Great job. I'll be hunting this on my next trip to home depot. I'd be curious to know if any plastic victims have succumbed to "the treatment".

Good article. A point to note: Foam brushes are like Polystrene Tiles and melt with any type of solvent except White spirits.
I usually try to use "Nitromors" on any figure I've tried to strip, but that's cos I get impatient. Leaving mini's in a jar for two weeks...I'm impressed. Do you have a URL for Klean-Strip so we in the UK can track it down?

So ccolinh, does the stripper work on plastics? It seems to do wonders on everything else, and the enviro-friendly bit sure beats the (supposedly) carcinogenic brake fluid option

Excellent Article - Great info - You might try to include some mention of what you did with the stripper after use - I have been using this stuff for years and I usually just wash it down the drain - no idea if that is good or not - any thoughts?
