PAINTING EASTERLINGS by Sven Adrian a.k.a. Keyser Soze

Introduction
I wrote this article, because I experienced lots of people, especially Beginners having problems with painting these wonderfull minis.
So here's my attempt at an easy and comprehensive painting guide for Beginners...well maybe it'll be an inspiration for some intermediates and experts as well.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my first article on CMON!

GW Paints used:
Chaos Black, Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather, Scab Red
Blood Red, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, Bleached Bone, Dark Flesh
Dwarf Flesh, Rotting Flesh, Chainmail, Mithril Silver, Shining Gold, Burnished Gold

GW Inks used:
Black Ink, Chestnut Ink, Brown Ink, Blue Ink

Other materials used:
GW Builder Sand, PVA adhesive and Static Grass

1. Step – (Spray-)Prime with Chaos Black

2. Step - Paint the armour

Start drybrushing the entire armour and helmet with Chainmail followed by Mithril Silver.
Gold armour always looks much better when it is painted over a Silver drybrush!

3. Step

Now drybrush with Shining Gold, followed by Burnished Gold and finally Mithril Silver, until the whole armour has a very bright golden look.

4. Step

Wash with a 80:20 Mix of Chestnut Ink (80%) und Blue Ink (20%), so that the armour gets a very bronze like tone (see Picture - left: before the wash, right: after the wash)

5. Step

The next step will take you some time, but it’s worth it!
Carefully outline every plate of the armour (as good as possible) with thinned Chaos Black. When done properly, the armour will look much cleaner and “deeper”.
Once again, but this time very lightly, drybrush with Shining Gold, Burnished Gold and finally Mithril Silver.
In case the armour turns out too bright, again wash it with thinned Chestnut Ink until you get the desired result.

6. Step - Painting the Weapons

Drybrush (or paint) the entire weapon with Chainmail, followed by a light drybrush with Mithril Silver
Wash the weapon with thinned Black Ink, then again lightly drybrush with Mithril Silver.

7. Step - Painting the tunic and the gloves

First repaint all parts of the miniature around the armour with Chaos Black.
Now paint the tunic with an 80:20 Mix of Chaos Black (80%) and Scab Red (20%).
Always try to leave very thin lines of Chaos Black between the tunic and the other part of the model like the armour, the belts etc.

8. Step:

The first highlight is done with a 50:50 Mix of Chaos Black and Scab Red.
Next one is done with 20:80 Mix Chaos Black und Scab Red.
Now highlight the tunic with pure Scab Red and add some final highlights with a 50:50 Mix of Scab Red and Blood Red.

9. Step:

Wash the tunic with a dark, thinned down 50:50 Mix of Chaos Black and Scab Red.
Should the tunic turn out too dark you can a) add some more highlights with the Scab Red – Blood Red Mix or/and b) wash it with thinned down Blood Red.

10. Step - Painting the leather parts (boots, belts)

Base the leather parts of the miniature with Scorched Brown, and then highlight them with Bestial of Vomit Brown.

Painting the remaining cloth parts (trousers, sashes):
You can
a) simply drybrush these parts with a 50:50 Mix of Chaos Black and Fortress Grey or
b) highlight them with several mixes of Chaos Black, Fortress Grey and Vomit Brown.
Wash with thinned down Chaos Black or Black Ink, then do a final light drybrush with Fortress Grey.

11. Step - Painting the face

Painting the Easterlings faces is actually quite easy, since most parts of their faces are covered by a black mask. So what you do is this:
First paint the entire face Chaos Black, paint the eye balls with Skull White and then paint the pupils with two very thin black lines right in the middle of the eyes.
Finally just highlight the raised areas of the face just above the eyes with an 80:20 Mix of Rotting Flesh (80%) and Dwarf Flesh (20%).

12. Step - Painting the base

Paint the entire base Dark Flesh, then brush thinned PVA adhesive onto it and dip the base into GW sand.
After drying, wash the sand with pure Brown Ink, then drybrush with Snakebite Leather, a 50:50 Mix of Snakebite Leather and Fortress Grey and finally pure Fortress Grey.
Now repaint the edge of the base with Dark Flesh again (that gives the base a much cleaner look) and add some different kinds of static grass to it.
The Easterling is now ready to march!

hmmm, I posted a comment a couple of days ago...hasn't appeared yet. I like the fact that you made it seem very simple and easy, yet it looks pretty darn good, and almost GW like in just a couple of minutes.

Very nice, Personally I would have liked to see the part where you highlight the tunic broken down into seperate sections with pics of each layer. But that's just me Good work.

Nice results, seems like an easy way to make a whole squad look *good*. The gold-over-silver technique is interesting though I personally loathe drybrushing with metallics.

Nice, amazingly clean metals for using drybrushing. Great job, makes em seem easy and quick to paint, but they still look good.
Why, if you put a bit more contrast on him, and took the pic from 5 feet away, I could imagine it was a GW paintjob!

Excellent! You're definiely using GW's "use-every paint-you-got-no-matter-how-crazy" strategy. At first I couldn't see where you were going with all that silver on there ... but I get it ... pretty cool ...
