Great tip! For those who need something to try it on and don't want to buy the bases, use corks! Just cut a chunk the height u need, and pick bits of it off with ur fingers or plastic cutters until u like the effect, prime and as above!

As a matter of fact, you can still order these bases. I just got my order from Scott last week, and I got this exact base, among a few others.

Well since you cant buy those bases anymore I had to figure out for myself how to make something equivalent. Heres what I did and it worked perfectly.

    -Buy a sheet of cork.
-Rip a chunk out in the shape you want. Circular being the obvious choice for most.
-glue smal rocks around the flat area at base. I used woodlandscenics.com Medium Ballast
-Cover medium ballast rocks with globs of varnish to help seal it in a little.

    Paint using techniques outlined above.

but what do you do if you dont have that "base as delivered". would be good to know how to make the texture of lava also. for those of us with nothing to paint, we can just look an hope to get somethiinng to try this on.

Very helpful! I'll be sure to try this! Let's see more of this kind of simplicity in all tutorials! Great job Klute!

I agree with the others that the simplicity of the tutorial is great and should yield a great base. As I paint more and more I find that the best way to make a figure pop is the base, and this technique will be a great help. Thanks a lot and I look forward to many more tips.

Tim, that would not be in keeping with the "simpleness" idea of the article. Also if you want it to "glow" more than this you would need a bleeding bulb underneath. Its the lack of layers and the big contrast in colour that tricks the eye you see.Let the secret out now.

To take this technique to the next level and really make the lava glow, use fluorescent yellow, orange and red instead of standard hobby colors.

The "reverse drybrush" (light to dark) paint sequence is
    white primer
    fluorescent yellow
    fluorescent orange
    fluorescent red
    normal red
    dark red
    dark gray
    black

This is the first piece I ever did using this technique: http://www.armorcast.com/terraform/picture/461l.jpg

Photo ain't great and does not really show how well it glows, but Steve Jackson picked it up at a GAMA show, looking for the light source underneath....

Thanks everyone. And to think I wasnt sure about this.
I think there is a general lack of quick and simple tutorials at a time when there seems to be a lot of new mid-range painters visiting cmon.
