Tau Vior'la Fire Warrior (Revised pics)

Originally posted as 107244, these are updated (and slightly sharper) pictures. The colors were off a little in the original pictures compared to how it looks in actuality, so I left histogram adjustments essentially intact thus decreasing the slight overly red tint of the previous images. Again, this is the first figure in my Tau Vior'la Sept Combat Patrol. In GW narrative, the Vior'la Sept is "fiery tempered" and are seasoned warriors. I decided to try a new and different color scheme to represent their "fiery" nature. I've intentionally kept the basing low-key and nondescript to play up the colors of the Tau (and the rest of the figures in the combat patrol.) Comments and criticisms, please!

I like the color scheme but offer this as advice to take or leave... Base: Muted is a good idea but I would darken up the base layer a bit, perhaps with a wash of brown ink as your first coat over the sand and as per technopaint at least one more highlight. Gun: The red on the gun looks a little to dark. Looks like the same red as the armor but didn't come out as bright, perhaps you painted the armor over a white basecoat and the red on the gun over black, or not as many layers were used (or maybe it's just the lighting). In any event brighten up the red on the gun I'd say.

You wanted constructive points, and normally I don't go into this much detail, but you have some really good things going on this one, but you have one flaw in your brush technique that is taking away points and will be easy for you to fix and the foward arm makes the mini look incomplete... the color choice is great, it flows very well, the mutted pallet is great... the muted base is a bit too mutted, lighten the gravel/land just a bit, give it a little bit of texture... now then, your blending... you are drawing you brush along the edge, instead of giving a blend it is giving you a bit of a line on your tranitions... the edge on the helmet, the inside edges on the tau symbol on the shoulder icon, draw you brush 90 degress from the edge and it will get rid of the line and male your blends much smoother (it breaks the edge so the eye cannot pick it out) sometimes you have no choice but on those two and several other places you could have drawn across instead of along and it would get rid of the edges. Also, the mini is highlighted to two different stages it looks like, if that was your intent it is okay, but the arm right arm (the one in front) looks like plastic, and you see the left arm which looks like it has a lot of shading and highlighting done, makes it look off. It is just that forward arm. Gun is also too dark, I can see some highlighting on the top of the gun, but it looks like that is all... there are a lot of other points on the gun that should be highlighted. Really and truly, change your brush techinique to draw across instead of along, do some more highlighting on the dark red, give the base a little depth, and I'll bet that it goes up by a whole point.
