St. George, Salute 2004 Miniature
The miniature here really isnt my cup of tea. Had to do some major repair work to the casting, and changed a couple of details entirely, like the original sword which was broken when I got it. Also, I cut down the integrated base and mounted it on a Dark Age base. This was the Salute 2004 special miniature, (for those not knowing what Im talking about, Salute is a large wargames convention held yearly in London - visit www.salute.co.uk) and this year it had its own categori in the painting competition, with promisses of cash rewards (well, 50£ to be spent on miniatures, but it counts the same) so I knew I had to paint it up. Not having much historical info to go by, I googled "saint George & the dragon" and came up with a bunch of artwork from different periods and -isms. What seemed to be a recouring image was St. George in black armour, on a white horse, fighting a red dragon. So thats what I went with. By seperating the three characters into colourschemes I was also able to force the focus of the diorama where I wanted it. This doesnt really shine through in photography, but is very evident IRL, where the base and the three characters forms an natural circle composition for the eye to follow round. The dominant figure becomes St. George, with his bright red cape and golden details. The dragon, by comparison, is painted with a more subdued natural red, and the horse, in the background, is pale whiteish, bound to St. George by the dark saddle and reins, and bound also to the dragon by the red scratches, thus forcing the idea that the horse is an unvilling casualty, caught between the two combatants.
