Actually it was the focus in this pic. The Balrog in the background is in better focus. Try shooting in front of a white piece of paper scooped/swooped upwards behind the mini.
I bet that the mini is painted very nice, but a better photo would bring up the ratings. I have the same problem, I can never captures a good enough picture. I know the lighting is a big part of it and the lighting in this pictures is uncontrolled.
