Da Gobbo's Giant- UK GD '06 Finalist
Hiya, fingers crossed this gets approved after the 5th attempt! Immense thanks to MisterJustin for his help and patience, and also to Krom for his offer of help, you are both stars! This was my entry into the Fantasy monster category for the UK 2006 Golden demon competition, and I was stoked that he made it through to the final round, especiall as the standard and quality of the competition had increased. I was also slightly relieved too given the ammount of itme I put into him (over 14 hours on the assembly and cleaning up alone!) He as also in several bits just before registration (aarrgh!!!!) and when put back together there was that white powdery glue residue on him but thankfully the judges looked past that! I am really pleased with the skin which is a good job as it seemed to take forever to do! There are 17 layers ( 18 in the face) excluding glazes. I am also very happy with the composition of the piece. I tried to theme it as if the goblins and their giant have been ramsacking Brettonnia,. The loin cloth is a tatty, muddy captured brettinian standard, the shields are in Brettonian heraldry and the knights helm on his belt also helps to portray this. I am also happy with the way the tartan patch and fleur de lyes patches on his trousers turned out as this is the first time this has been attempted by me. The freehand was also a very welcome break from painting the large, never ending skin areas too! I added the goblins to the miniature for two reasons- to help make him stand out and give it a bit of originality - this was the first Golden demon competition since the release of the new giant kit and I thougt there may be a few entered! But mainly to add an element of humour. I wanted to make the judges smile and help the mini stick in their mind. There is one sitting on the sack, giggling as he tickles the unfortunate captured halflings bare foot with a feather. another gobbo is swinging from the cow's tail, sticking his two fingers up at his 'mate' who was onlucky enough to get squished by the smashed fence panel. My favourite one has to be the one swinging from the club, this I feel really adds a sense of movement, and the model looks imcomplete without him! The Goblins in the howdah were intended to represent a command squad, with the leader taking pride of place in the howdah, bellowing orders at the giant. The musucian is holding on to the howdah tooting on his horn. I did intend to add a thire gobbo hangin onto the horizontal banner bar for dear life, to represent the units standard, but unfortunatley ran out of time. I feel the standard is a bit 'plain' but it is very difficult to do an elaborate standard whilst staying true to the character of the orcs and goblins. Thanks for reading if you made it this far down!!! As always comments are appreciated!
