Barrow Wight - UK Golden Demon entry 2006
This year I only managed one entry for the UK Golden Demon competition. I wanted to enter the LotR category, and decided to try a broken composition, with a high fantasy tone. Working on the barrow wight, I refered more to Tolkiens descriptions of the wights rather than GWs established concept. The key to the miniature is one of seclution & selfcontainment. The Barrow Wights are imitations of dead kings, who lure in their victims and devour their spirits - I wanted to portray this by representing their element, the woods, as a closing, devourering embrace. The composition of the miniature is intended to draw towards the wight in the center, drawing in the viewer in the fashion of its victims. The colour purple is chosen for its regal symbolism. I dirtied it up a notch, as is my fashion.. the gold is there for the same reasons as the purple. I made finalist with this piece, but apparently the technical aspects of the paintjob werent quite up there - I will admit., it was a bit of a rush job, mainly painted the nights before the competion. Next year, more time :-) PS: A real bitch to photograph. WHich is why I have finally uploaded it now.
