First ever space marine, would appreciate tips on painting white cloths (cloaks) as i ended up just painting them one colour because i found the shading hard, all comments welcome :)
Shading takes practice. Try layering on scorched brown, beastial brown, bleached bone, and then bleached bone mixed with white (these are GW paint colors, by the way). It's okay to do several layers of milky-watery paints, especially white, and layer up on the highlights, leaving the recesses a little dark and less pure. It looks strange as you're doing it but the end result comes together with some practice.
