Gandalf at the Bridge of Khazad Dûm w/ OSL
These are additional pictures of Gandalf and the bridge he's standing on to go along with entry #164731. This figure won Silver at the Chicago Golden Demon Competition 2007, and was one of my entries at my first time attending a Golden Demon! With the scene, I'm trying to portray two light sources on the figure (one of which is from a Balrog off-scene.) The first effect is a bright white light from the crystal on his staff - note: unlike most depictions I've seen (even the Fellowship of the Ring film where I got my inspiration for his pose), I painted the white light as if it's emanating from the crystal and NOT the head of the staff itself. With the projections of wood on his staff beneath the crystal, I feel the white light should actually be blocked moreso in several places unlike what is shown (briefly) in the film and what has been done on OSL-effect Gandalf figures I've seen painted thus far. The white light is carried over from the figure and shines onto areas of the bridge not blocked by Gandalf's body/staff or those too far away to realistically reflect the crystal's pure white light. The second lighting effect is an ambient fire glow from an imaginary Balrog challenging Gandalf at a distance from the facing end of the bridge, much like in the scene from the movie where Gandalf challenges the beast from the bridge span, raises his staff alight, and shouts "You cannot pass!" I tried to carry similar lighting in the film over to the scenery, while keeping everything referential to the Gandalf on the bridge. The bridge is lit as if by orange fire coming from the (off-scene) Balrog, and fades along the length of the bridge into a dull red - the cliff faces are a bit more brightly lit tapering off into shadow beneath the span. The shadow directly behind Gandalf is cast from the glow of the Balrog but tapers out into the ambient light of the rest of the scene as if the light source (the Balrog) was in motion or flickering. Comments and constructive criticism appreciated!
