You are right, it isn't great. But there are some things going for it. First suggestion would be going into the forums and posting WIP pictures. Second, would be to do something with the base. Sand and glue would be better than what is there now. There is some basic prep work that would help, such as drilling out the end of the gun so that it actually looked like a gun.
