Trollblood Diretroll Blitzer
Biggest miniature I have painted in years, but very rewarding to have it finally finished and sitting on the shelf. This was supposed to have been my entry for the Salute painting competition in 2007 - And I nearly almost got it halfway assembled before the deadline! I eventually got it done and entered into the Salute 2008 competition. This is an absolute monster to assemble, with gapping holes in the back and massive pinning required. I had to replace the original chain with a jewellers chain, as the casting was way off and it would not fit, no matter how violently I bent it. In terms of painting the beast, I went for a natural palette with a lot of ochre and reddish brown mixed in everywhere. The base colour of the trolls skin starts around P3 traitor green, with a 1:3 ratio of P3 Wyrm green mixed in, to make it a bit more green. Highlighting is done with adding some bone and light skintones into the mix, and glazing between each stage with warm colours (mainly Tamyia clear orange and GW dark flesh, with whatever other warm tones I had at hand used as well). Halfway through the highlighting stages, I went back and shaded the deep recesses, and anything that lies in shadow, with a mid blue, and then followed by deep, purpleish blue for the deepest shadows. Then everything was highlighted back up a bit, up until the final highlight, and finally the colours were intensified with more glazes to strengthen and clean up the overall look. The same process was used for the rest of the model, only with different base colours, as appropriate.
