First Painted Miniature - Khador Destroyer

This is my first painted miniature ever! It looks pretty bad. Splotches everywhere. Old drying paint + my newbie skill produced this. I am going to strip him and repaint him very soon. I like the red I was going with but I am looking for something a bit.. different and maybe a tad darker. Also, I'd like to do highlights. Anyone have any guides that are good for beginners (perhaps something I haven't google searched). Thanks!
