the Very first Ultramarine

This is my first mini ever. It's spacemarine from GW starter kit. Bolter is gold cause Boltgun paint was... emmm... like sand or something similar... I know that this mini is bad painted =( No highlights or wash... Drybrushed backpack is too hard to recognize on photo =( But i'll practice =) Question - Does I need to mix acryl paints with water? Cause as you can see, layers of paint are really think. That was big problem for me =(

Yep, you'll want to mix in some water until the paint is a good viscosity. If the silver was dried out or something, you might be able to take it back, or possibly just add water and stir, and see if that fixes it. It looks like you faced him the wrong way on the base, usually you want the bigger part of the base at the front because that's how the figures are balanced.

This is not a bad start. To answer your question, yes dilute the paint with water and use several coats instead of one thick. Start by just adding a little water for the basecoat but if you want to try out highlighting add more water to ensure that the paint does not turn out thick. To make highlighting on a space marine, one effective way is to use the lining technique. Take a little paint on the brush, carefully, take some of it away on a towel and then use the side of the brush on the edges of the plates. Highlight the edges facing upwards first and foremost to imitate a lightsource. If the lines becomes too thick, just use basecoat to fix them. Another thing that will improve this mini and your following miniatures is to clean off the mould lines. Happy painting and hope something helpts :) Sven
