Yes, I'm afraid it's the gloss. I really can't tell at all how well it's painted. And oddly, I'm not sure why she's flying backwards through a muddy field, but that's more a problem with the sculpt than your fault.
The gloss varnish inevitably makes the blended transitions much harsher than they otherwise would be, which is why most display pieces are never glossed.
Yes it is the shine I think. I think the mud is a little over done too, though she is running through a muddy puddle I suppose. THere is some really good blending on here and some not so good but overall it is the shine that lets it down. The pic quality could be better to but that may also be down to the shine. Love the base.
