Umber Hulk

I was trying to go for a shiny beetle carapace look here. I am extremely happy with how both sets of eyes turned out (the big ones and the ruby ones). I intentionally left the claws and mandibles the same color as his body; I tried a different color and he just didn't look as buggy. :) You can't really tell it, but the base just looks like dirt with a few rocks. Comments are welcome and much appreciated!

I like everything but the eyes,, and the finish. FWIW, I'd have used satin varnish ( humbrol satin cote ) over it.

Actually, what would really make this mini look glossy and shiney (but it would be a heck of alot of work) is to paint it like you would vinyl--you'd want to bring the highlights up to white where the light is directly hitting it, and you'd want it to be a pretty extreme transition. It would sorta be like painting him NMM. :) Anyhow, I think that using a gloss coat would probably be easier. I love the purple to blue transitions on this guy and both of the eyes are pretty fantastic. The color transitions look particularly great on the sides and his mandibles--for some reason they don't seem as "solid" on his backside to me, but I don't know why. maybe because the blue is thicker in spots?

Thanks Temperance. You're probably right about the gloss coat, but I don't have the guts to try it! :)
