Try painting the face a nice even colour, say just a standard flesh colour. Then when dry wash with dark flesh or even a light brown (make the wash like milk consistancy)
when dry retouch with original flesh colour leaving the shadows in the gaps then work up from there. Go slow and enjoy!! :-)
