You -can- dye your hair a blue/black and it's black but grey is still not the right highlight. Comic book style - use the darkest midnight blue you can find :)
Finish that base and your score will jump.
Also, no one has black hair. It's really just very dark brown. Instead of painting black and highlighting gray, try painting dark brown, washing black, and highlighting with a lighter brown. Just a thought.
