Ravenguard Sergeant Uziel

This was both my first and second attempt at the light source effects... the first trial run turned out well, but once the rest of the hilights went on and the varnish was applied, the darker tones of the blue sunk into the black and the glow became a lot less obvious. When I went back to finish up the rest of the axe (handle and shaft) I also redid the glow... basically the same transition as the first time but stretched out a bit more to become a little more striking. That's one thing I hate about this particular varnish I'm using... it blends colors together really nicely but it does strange things to black. Takes all the depth out of it, and almost makes it look like a dark grey rather than pure black. Sadly that also means some of the darker hilighting over black gets lost too, but I'm still quite happy with the results on any other colors I use so it's not all bad :) In case anyone was wondering, yes the whole army will (hopefully) be as nice looking as this Sergeant. I have done about 15-20 models so far and with a bit of luck and hard work everything will be finished up before the GT at the end of October! Almost forgot to mention... it was Matt Verzani's wicked Cypher model that served as the primary "inspiration" for the model. I really liked the color choices he made and carried some over to this fig.

save for the white that just looks flat and the face that could have used more subtle highlights, it's perfect. I really like the overal look and what you have done to the black; good luck with the army.

coll idea, but as the highlights (e.g. on the back ) have the same color as the lighting from the axe, I would not guessed there is lighting on this one; even without it, a good job, perhaps the face could have used more care

Old school GW matte varnish actually... it was after the stuff that is currently known as purity seal and before the return of Purity Seal. So it's probably ~18 months old if not a bit more. Works great for Fantasy figs with lots of cloth and linens as opposed to lots of black or metallics... I just didn't want the Ravenguard shiny since the armor's so predominantly black, it'd look strange and the hilights would get lost in the glare.
