LOTR Nazgul & Frodo on sculpted base by James
This figure was tough from the very start. I spent at least 3 hours with green stuff filling all the gigantic gaps in nearly every part of the fell beast itself. For a figure that was scupted so nicely, it was rather shocking to see how it had been manufactured to a much lower standard. The wings were the worst, of course. No amount of glue would get them to attach, so I set them in green stuff (this worked very nicely later on when it came time to get the whole critter/wraith mounted on the sculpted base!). Creating the ruined tower was a bit of a logistical nightmare, but after several hours and many modifications, that had been sculpted. Painting the fell beast was, I thought, going to be the biggest challenge, and it certainly turned out that way. Knowing that the Wraith and the tower would be mostly grey, I had to come up with a way to make the beast stand out a bit. My solution was to make the greys on the skyward sides as blue as possible, while making the lower surfaces very warm tones. I believe this still shows up in the photos, though not as much as in person. The surfaces requiring painting were just enormous, so it was very difficult to "see" the whole working area at once, as I normally would. There were five general layers of paint 'n glaze, with one dark brown wash and another black glaze. When it came time to put the whole thing together, I held my breath more than once :-)
