Harkus, Ghost King

I tried a lot of new things with this mini. It's the first time I've tried a rust effect (on the sword). I thought it looked pretty good until I visited the Confrontation site and saw that painter's rust effects. This mini also has the first "shiny gem effect" on the helmet. It looks okay when you're holding it as apposed to having it magnified in a photo. I wanted the miniature to have an ethereal, ghost-like quality to it, thus the bloodstone-blue shading around the bone parts. I also tried to age/weather the armor and cloak to make it look like it had been lying around for a few centuries. I am happy with how it turned out, but it did look a lot cooler when I pictured it in my mind.

Very cool! Love the gems, nice job. The cloak is nicely nasty. Almost looks slimy, though that could be the gloss. The rust effect on the sword is a nice affect, but could use a little more... hmm... brownish red? Perhaps a glaze layer or three. The light blue color as a wash for the bones is throwing me a bit. I'd go with something darker to really make 'em pop. Good job over all! I like it!

Thanks for the constuctive critism! I really appreciate the tips and guidance. Looking at the photo, I can definitely see where a wash would help on several areas. And the idea of feathering with a damp clean brush is a great idea that I haven't heard of before. Can't wait to try that. I haven't sealed this mini yet (thus the shininess), so I can still go back and make improvements. I've thought about blacklining before, but am a little intimidated by it. Are there any good guides for blacklining?

The helmet gem does look shiny, nicely done :). Some other things though - I think that his armour could use a bit more definition, so a bit of a dark ink wash in the recesses would help there. It also looks quite grainy - were you diluting it when you painted it on? The brown ink on his cloak seems quite thick, and to be honest it makes me think of guts - the purple and shiny brown and pale bits... it doesn't really look like a cloak. If it was matte then that would help, but the brown+purple combo is a little strange. I might've used either just purple ink, or mixed quite a bit of purple into the brown to bring its colour closer to what it's shading. The blue around the bone is an interesting idea, I can see where you were going with it, but I think it could be blended a little more into the surrounding colour - the edge is quite abrupt. Feathering the edge with a damp clean brush once you've put down the blue colour is one way to do this without having to do loads of mixing and glazing. It seems a little odd that everything except the skeleton is dirty, but then again it adds to the ghostly look :)
