If your only painting for table top quality, then these are perfect. Look a little shabby up close, but in a unit they are gold.
For smooth transitions in colour (even when doing strong highlighting) you always need water. Maybe not the milk consistancey most painters reconmend, but definately thin enough to see some portion of the previous layer beneath it.
