The dragon`s calm, motionless appearance was a deliberate choice for this piece. His relaxed demeanor is intended to juxtapose him with the activity of his base. This sculpture was created as an expression of my experiences with meditation and celibacy; there is a feeling of great power and urgency, yet the figure remains still and serene. To see that the dragon sits like a sphinx is to begin to understand. Dragons are a hybrid of three types of animals: cats, birds of prey, and snakes. The sphinx, already possesing the feline and avian qualities, needs only the serpent to complete the dragon`s fierce trinity. The wisdom of the snake allows the creature to be the solution to its own riddle. Satisfied that it is both the answer and the question, the dragon sits serene in its great and terrible gnosis.
