Pablo the Clown

Here is my take on Romain Van den Bogaert's bust 'Struggle'. This is Pablo, this is his story: In the 1970’s Pablo was a famous clown within his home town of Paris. He was renowned for his small stature and unique comical style of entertainment. He gained a legion of fans over the years who loved and adored him, fans of all ages would travel from all across Europe to see one of his shows. The circus life was a demanding one, travelling from town to town, day after day, week after week. Although Pablo was surrounded by devoted fans who worshiped his every move Pablo was lonely. His life on the road was taking its toll, he was getting old and tired, the reality of what he had sacrificed in the pursuit of his art was consuming him. The one thing he longed for above all else was to be loved, not for Pablo the clown but for Pablo the old man. As the years went on Pablo’s popularity was fading as new younger and fresher acts were emerging. He struggled to pull in the crowds and the devotees were getting smaller and smaller as the years went by. As Pablo’s popularity declined so did his health both physical and mental and the one thing he feared the most was becoming a reality, being alone. By the early 1980s Pablo’s career was long since over, his days were now spent alone in his cold damp flat above a back street coffee shop. He would often try and block out his misery and re-live the glory years of Pablo the clown, only this time the voices laughing were the ones in his head….
