Emperor's Children Eidolon
Here's my latest piece Eidolon of Emperor's Children Fame. This is a shot of him after the massacre on Istvaan 5 looking down on the slaughter field with contempt. I feel like at this point he was starting to go chaos here but he's still capable of moving skillfully and avoiding damage and blood splatter because at this point he hadn't lost his head yet. Wanted to capture the essence of the fall to decadence but not be completely there yet - the sculpt doesn't really have the feel of being deep in the heresy right? At least I think so. Had a lot of fun with this one and absolutely LOVE the sculpt. I was a bit disappointed that the model still has distinct stepping from the 3D printing process and hope this is the only model that is going to suffer from this. I'm a firm believer that the manufacturer should clean those lines off before going into mass production because it took me hours to make it smooth and I still didn't get it perfect and so I tried to hide them with the limited amount of battle damage I have painted. Also, I've been trying to figure out some issues I'm having with colour profiling and level editing with Photoshop in post so I really hope this doesn't appear overly dark, saturated and contrasty for you, it looks alright to me, if it looks bad for you could you please let me know? It means I need to work on my image saving procedure. If you're interested in my struggles with the base and overall blood splatter & battle damage on this one keep reading for people who are in the TL:DR category I painted the base 5 different ways and eventually landed on the tried and true Iron Hands Black. So - the long version... I had quite a struggle with the base on this one and painted it many different ways (five different times if you believe it). For the first half of my time painting this model I was thinking "okay this is Eidolon during his time fighting the White Scars, a bit later in the heresy" and then it clicked for me that White Scars really don't use Dreadnoughts and so it just wouldn't work for the fiction - ok MAYBE they might have a few, but a Deredeo? No way. I had also planned on a lot more battle damage and blood splatter if it was going to be that late in the heresy but thankfully I hadn't painted that far yet. Thus I had to re-think things a bit. After this I went all the way back to Istvaan 3 and I first tried Sons of Horus and alas it just didn't look right, the Sons of Horus desaturated bluish green colour is just off from directly complimentary to the Magenta Pinky Purple I've used and it just looked bad, so I had to start the base again. Next, I tried a super rusted up thing that has been there for ages, had no Legion markings or anything but again, the browny orange of the rust just didn't work with the purple and garish blue-green of his cloak, so I decided to have another go at this type of base but go for the completely metallic - paint has been completely stripped it's been there for ages look - but that didn't look right either, so I thought maybe it could still be Istvaan 3 and he's standing on a Emperor's Children Deredeo and it's so rotten because of the virus bombs but then there was waayyyy too much purple and so, while I was trying to do something different I ended up painting my Eidolon and in particular his base almost exactly the same colour scheme as Forgeworld's model. Being a big time Horus Heresy fanboy I'm not unhappy with the outcome. Interesting story? Probably not.
