For your first mini the painting is fairly neat with just a few messy bits, namely where the beard touches the helmet. If this happens just cut back into the helmet line with some more yellow from the beard. Or paint with a second brush ready to remove most of the unwanted wet paint. Greater brush control is one of those things that will come in time. When it comes to washes they are your friend especially when first learning. They are great for delineating areas of different colours. For example, a chestnut colour wash would show up all the detail in the beard and help divide it from the helmet. If you want the beard to stand out more think about priming it with white. This can be done by brush afterwards if you like. Thinning your paints slightly with water can also give you more control. For starters you don't need to thin it much. Just enough to make the paint go on smoother. There are plenty of tutorials on here and elsewhere so I won't go into it all. If you want to know something specific you can always PM me. I don't claim to know everything though and most of the artists on here are only too happy to help.
