Primaris Space Marine Intercessor

This is my first completed mini ever. I learned a lot through the process and hope to only improve. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Things I would like to point out: 1.The wash turned out really dirty and not how I hoped. Next time I am going to work on targeting areas instead of washing the whole mini and letting it dry that way. It created a dirt across the item I do not like. 2. I have some splatter occuring where I believe I was being too aggressive with the brush and it was flinging paint around. I am going to work on being more delicate when I paint the details. 3. I need to slow down and thin my paint more, the glopped mess on the shoulders needs to be avoided as well as on the helmet. 4.I wish the helmet had more saturation. I was painting over a black primer and think I would have been in a better situation with a different primer or many more controlled layers of the red. 5. I didn't really tackle highlights on this model how I would have liked. I got frustrated when I had to redo the airbrushed base coat and highlighting when I accidently got paint on portions while doing details. I need to be more careful painting the details as to not mess up my base coat. 6. The basing turned out too grey and I had hoped for it to look more like a busted asphault instead of concrete. 7. The eyes need to be more carefully painted. I purchased a much finer higher quality brush for these details in the future. If you have anything else to add, feel free to do so. I'm looking to learn as much as I can. Given the self critiques I am still happy to complete a mini and feel like I learned much along the process.

Hi there, Well I must say well done, very decent attempt indeed. You seem to have relatively good brush control and shouldn’t take a hell of a lot to sharpen up your skills. You have pretty much hit the nail on the head with your self critique so I might just add a few little tips for each of your points to help you achieve the finish I’m presuming your after. 1. If you wash a whole area and it comes out dirty like this, then re-base coat with very thin layers leaving the recesses/heavy shade areas untouched. The thinness of the paint will allow for transparency of the shade out to an opaque base coat. This will require many layers to get a good result. Targeting shade areas is a good idea too, especially on a space marine or other minis with large flat areas. Will save time having to re-base coat. Alternatively you can apply multiple thinned shade layers, concentrating on the heaviest recesses. 2. The splatter is coming from dry brushing yeah ? Well this is hard to avoid. Personal opinion - put away that dry brush and paint with shades and highlights (a lot more professional and appealing). And any misplaced paint can always be covered over, given your thinning your paints correctly. 3. Yes slow down. A well painted mini takes a hell of a long time to finish, don’t rush it. And yes thin your paint (this is a must) there is stacks of info about this online so do some research. But mostly that globby mess you speak of is from brush strokes as the paint is drying, don’t work it too much (although you will find you won’t need to if your using paint of the right consistency. 4. The red looks fine to me (as in colour). As above thin paint my friend and many many layers to get the colour opaque. Oh and for washing red, to me black is a no, try a dark brown wash, will provide a more realistic look. 5. Highlights are a must. For your level just try working on edge highlighting with only a few lighter shades. (Thin paints and several coats once again so mistakes can be fixed). As you progress you can try as I suggested in point one with each consecutive layer being brightened from the base colour to your highest highlight. 6. Fix it. Re-wash/base coat it and paint the colour you desire. 7. Paint the eyes first !!! Outline with black/dark brown then paint it with the surrounding base colour. Or just touch up with base colour once you have painted them (if your doing it after. AND again thin paints !!! I recommend doing them first though, nothing worse than having a great paint job then ruining it all by messing up the eyes. Just remember, to achieve a good paint job it’s going to take a hell of a lot of coats, which means a huge amount of time. You won’t be perfect after just a couple of goes, it takes heaps and heaps of practice to nail these techniques. Hit up YouTube etc for tips on how to do things etc, or even better ask on here, heaps of people willing to share their secrets :) Anyways I hope this helps you out a little, and keep it up. I look forward to seeing how your progress goes.

Forgot to add the missed mold lines. I noticed these early after the base coat but decided to not go back and fix them right now. I may revisit this model once I have more underneath my belt. We shall see.
