Your picture is overexposed (or the brightness is too high). That's going to hurt. I can see that the leg is highlighted but because of the overexposure, the light part is all washed out white.
As for the painting, from what I can tell you need to make sharper highlights on the dark spots (hair and armor) so the details/edges really pop out.
