Clone trooper

Okay. A little explanation may be needed here. Fist of all, this isn't a miniature in the sense of what we'd normally think of as a mini. It's a toy soldier found in a pack of similar toys at a dollar store. Secondly, I'm not the artist. My ten year old son is. This is his very first try at mini painting. Please take these things into account before you vote as this rating might be a vehicle to help cultivate a love for the art. I understand that this community isn't about boosting egos, so all I ask is that you all be honest, but not brutal to my kid. Also, comments he could learn from are 100% welcome.

The mini is very cleanly painted, so your son very clearly has the agility and patience needed to paint great minis. The gun even has some shadow and lighting effects, that's promising, too. That is a very remarkable result for a first attempt by a ten year old. When my kids started out they needed more time to reach this level (e.g. here http://kolyusha.blogspot.com/2011/12/verschiedene-tau.html or http://kolyusha.blogspot.com/2009/08/kilians-space-marines.html - these are not "first minis", though) By the standards of the CMON community, a simple paint job with flat, but clean colors applied to all parts of a mini does not rate very highly (I would give it a 4 for that), because of all the high end artists posting here. But: - the mini is immediately ready for tabletop play and really nice and clean for that purpose (which is what this hobby is about in my book...) - the next step would be very easy for someone with the skill used on this mini so far: applying some washes for shading and picking out a few highlights on the red armor parts and the weapon, and a bit if color and/or texture on the base - white as a base color for the armor is easy to paint and looks good on this level of painting, but is fiendishly different to treat well in shading and highlighting. Red is hard to highlight sharply, as well. So I would suggest trying the first attempts at that on minis with slightly darker base colors, like blue, grey, green, brown or a darker, more brownish red.
