LOTR Mounted Glorfindel on Dapple
Concept: My first mounted mini. I loved the horse in comparison to the High Elf model ones I had seen before - Glorfindel himself was okay - but his face was very angular and pointed due to being cast with the mold line basically down the center of his face. The model comes in two pieces - him and half of the horse and then the second half of the horses body. Had some gaps but no huge drama. Now what color to paint him. I looked into the history of Glorfindel (asked a LOTR crazy friend of mine) and he explained that Glorfindel is a powerful noble and actually the one who rescues Frodo at the river - not Arwen. Originally his horse was outstretched over some grass (notable by the clump cast to one hoof). I decided to portray the river scene - horse paused, rearing, ready to charge into battle....giving him his rightful place in LOTR history. The color scheme on this one was a bit troublesome - but finally I got something I liked. Execusion: The paint job is a combination of Citidel paints, and a few inks. His skin has a base of Dwarven Flesh, Graveyeard Earth, Scorched Brown and Elf Flesh (I find the Graveyard tones down the horrible orange color in the Flesh tones. I gave him more ruddy cheeks from riding and his tiny eyes are painted but not blacklined. His cloak is a base of Elf Flesh highlighted with Bleached Bone, and Skull White. The freehand band is Black with Shining Gold trim in a random pattern. His robes are all blues - the bottom layer is Shadow Gray and Space Wolves Gray - and the upper robe is Regal Blue and Black highlighted with increasing amounts of Enchanted Blue. His sash is the same mix as the horse's insets - Hawk's Turquoise and Space Wolves Gray washed with a watered down version of the Regal Blue-Black base. His hair is a base of Snakebite Leather, Scorched Brown and Bleached Bone - highlighted with increasing amounts of Snakebite Leather and White. The horse was based in a dark bluey-gray concoction and then highlighted with added Skull White. I then added his dapples and washed with a darker grey to blend them - then touched up a few spots to bring them back. The horses tack is based with Snakebite Leather and Scorched Brown, washed with Black ink and highlighted with Shining Gold. The insets are Hawk's Turquoise, Space Wolves Gray and a bit of Skull White. Mane and tail are Black with Scorched Brown and Gray hihlights - pretty straight forward. The base - the land is a dark coffee (actual coffee) leading to the river bank of sand and cork ballast. These were painted Scorched Brown and highlighted with Graveyard Earth. The water was made using Water Effects over a blue painted section of the base then further painted with several washes and a final higlight of Space Wolves Gray. Well that's it - any questions just ask!
