You've got a great base to build on, now it's just refinement. You definitely need to to thin your paints more. When you don't thin enough, the paint takes on a chalky look (see your whites). This should also help with blending up to your hilights because you'll be working with several thin layers, as opposed to just painting on a thick hilight line.
