Magic Realm Witch-King HeroQuest Chaos Sorceror
I am producing a prototype of Magic Realm playing pieces using minis I have on hand whenever possible. Magic Realm was a game put out by Avalon Hill in 1976 and in my opinion is one of the greatest board games ever made. There are 16 characters to choose from, each being an archtype of fantasy literature. The characters have cards detailing their abilities and equipment on one side and with a painting of the character on the other (bottom image). Your character is represented on the board by a 1 inch diameter round cardboard counter (inset in the rear picture) with a unique simbol. The 1 inch size just screamed miniature to me. Because these are meant to replace cardboard counters, I have made the base represent the counter as much as possible. This one is the Witch King. He is described in the game as "an incorporeal manifestation of magic....With magic...he is masterful. He controls the powerful Elemental, Demonic and Conjuring spells." I was surprised how much this old Chaos Sorceror from HeroQuest matched the painting. Both have scantily clad muscular bodies with feet apart. Both have helmets, and are wearing a skull around the neck and big belt with a skull. Matching the colors wasn't too hard. I primed the whole thing black, then highlighted the cloak with purple and the skin with GW rotting flesh. I didn't like the miniature's old-school GW chaos ball-above-the-helmet look so I cut the ball and just made the horns into ordinary bull horns. Part of my goal here was to minimize modifications as much as possible, but this one I just had to do. I have many more coming under the title "Magic Realm..."
