Magic Realm Captain
I am producing a prototype of Magic Realm playing pieces using minis I have on hand whenever possible. Magic Realm was a game put out by Avalon Hill in 1976 and in my opinion is one of the greatest board games ever made. There are 16 characters to choose from, each being an archtype of fantasy literature. The characters have cards detailing their abilities and equipment on one side and with a painting of the character on the other (bottom image). Your character is represented on the board by a 1 inch diameter round cardboard counter (inset in the rear picture) with a unique simbol. The 1 inch size just screamed miniature to me. Because these are meant to replace cardboard counters, I have made the base represent the counter as much as possible. From the rulebook: "the Captain is a renowned hero of many wars." This is a cheapo mini from a Milton Bradley game called Lionheart. The mini has many problems, but I am really impressed with the face. It's like the sculpter spent all his time on the face then said "oh yeah, need a body by 5:00!" Anyway, he fit the bill for a man with short sword, helmet, breastplate and shield. I painted him in copper colored armor to match the painting and for fun did his shield up with a repeat of the playing counter (since it was round).
