Magic Realm Black Knight
I am producing a prototype of Magic Realm playing pieces using minis I have on hand whenever possible. Magic Realm was a game put out by Avalon Hill in 1976 and in my opinion is one of the greatest board games ever made. There are 16 characters to choose from, each being an archtype of fantasy literature. The characters have cards detailing their abilities and equipment on one side and with a painting of the character on the other (bottom image). Your character is represented on the board by a 1 inch diameter round cardboard counter (inset in the rear picture) with a unique simbol. The 1 inch size just screamed miniature to me. Because these are meant to replace cardboard counters, I have made the base represent the counter as much as possible. DESCRIPTION from the rules: "the Black Knight is a deadly and feared veteran of many battlefields." For possibly one of the most powerful and easy winning characters of the game I have this rather poor heavy footman from Lionheart by Parker Brothers (source for my Pilgrim and Captain as well). My intent with this project was to do as much as possible with what I had on hand and with as little work as possible. This is a plastic mini so carving wasn't too hard. I had to remove the halbard he originally carried and it was badly molded to the cloak so that needed work. I left a piece of the halbard haft and glued on one of the mace heads from the weapons rack from Milton Bradley/GW's HeroQuest. That is actually a nice source of some fancy weapons. Since the mini's shield already had the charge molded on, I chose to paint the image from the card onto the cloak instead. I think it came out rather nicely so I included a close-up. There are way too many layers of paint on this figure because I kept experimenting with making his armor look metal but also look black. Also I had a tough time sorting out the purple shades. But since he wasn't too detailed to begin with, not much is lost. I hope you enjoy this and check out the rest of my Magic Realm series.
