Nadin - I ran into the same weirdness on my shields with crosses - an easy solution is to simply blackline right around the cross. It adds a heckuva lot of detail for only seconds of work and makes it all look a lot cleaner!

Neater work on the shield could easily push this up (with better light of course). The background of the shield looks swirley for some reason.
