Or this is a cropped image, and the auto-focus sensor was on the rock. Manual focus camera's are soo much easier, especially for composition where you want to put something in the corner of the shot, ala the rule of thirds bad rating for bad picture

The rock behind the mini is in focus, but the miniature is not. Most likely you were taking the picture with the mini too close to the lens.
