Top view of diorama for Meliador the Celestial by James
This top view of the observatory for Meliador shows the astronomical chart painted on the floor. The planesphere covers some of that, which is why the planesphere can be removed. You can see several decorations done in in bas relief, among other adornments. The roof was particularly complex, since it was supposed to be broken. While sculpting the roof, I had to use heavy support wires to maintain the proper shape. Once it was baked, then I could go about cutting the wires, and carving away further details. The bronze work on top of the colummn was also difficult, as some of it was nearly unreachable! I used the harder sculpey for much of the column, since it was going to have to support a great deal of weight. Again, this sort of bronze work is pretty common on Chicago museums, so I decided to give the roof and other surfaces a green patina.
