this is the very first mini i painted...still haven't finished the base (yes, i know...SLACKER!!). not to shabby...a little chalky looking though.

A very good start if this is your first mini. Try thinning your paint a little more as you layer and highlight and this will help lessen the chalky look. You could also apply a dark wash over areas you're not happy with.
