You need to do a color balance on your camera or through software (picture-it, Gimp, photoshop). One simple cure is to use Reveal bulbs or Halogen bulbs to eliminate the yellow cast from regular bulbs.

As to your painting: i like your fleshtones and the book. The dress has a nice effect, but it still needs shadowing and highlighting more.
