LIghtly sand the table of the jewel and then paint Future Floorwax over it to keep the transparent aspect and get rid of the scratches.

how would you keep the transluscency of the crystals? maybe an ink wash?

I painted one of these for my army. The crystls take flash badly and don't look as obtuse in real life.
