undercoat black, i pretty much paint everything from a black undercoat.
stage 1
paint the areas you want red with scab red, try to get a smooth coverage.

stage 2
paint the previous areas with a 50/50 mix of blood red/ red gore. make sure to leave a little of the scab red showing in the recesses.

stage 3
i forgot to take a pic of this stage, but its pretty simple. paint the previous area with blood red. make sure to leave a little of the previous colour showing.
stage 4
paint the previous area with a 50/50 mix of blood red/ blazing orange. make sure to leave some of the previous colour showing.

stage 5
highlight the armour with blazing orange.

stage 6 (optional)
at this stage, i decided to give more shadow to the red by carefully painting chestnut ink into the recesses. this requires a steady hand and a fine bush. dont worry if you get some chestnut on the red, you can cover it over after it dries.

stage 7
using a piece of foam from a blister pack (cut into a strip approx 1cm square) dab fiery orange onto the parts of the armour you want chipped. i find this is best around sharp edges and areas that would make alot of contact with the ground or walls and would be damaged that way.

stage 8
this is the most tricky and important part of the whole process. using a fine brush, carefully paint dark flesh into the larger areas of fiery orange, making sure that there is a line of orange around the dark brown. next, using the very tip of the brush, carefully paint small dots and lines of dark flesh along with/next to the smaller areas of fiery orange.

some more finished shots

and there you have it, a pretty simple way of doing red armour with battle damage.
