First of all this is not meant to be a step by step copy guide, more of a inspire you type thingy.
I know there are loads of you out there who want to do well at GD, I've been going for years and
up to a few years ago kept getting knocked back each time. I nearly gave up but the love of
painting got me through and going back for more, so here are a few tips on how to get a pin.
1. You don’t need to spend loads of money on paints, brushes etc straight away. Get a selection
of paint (I use GW and Vallejo) and 2 GOOD quality brushes (I use Winsor & Newton Series 7)
and maybe a few cheaper types for mixing etc.
2. Be realistic with yourself, after painting LOOK at the blasted thing - is it clean, no brush strokes
/ lumps of paint? Get rid of the mould lines etc.
3. I always spray undercoat instead of brushing, I find its a smoother finish.
4. Put the hours in, its no good not painting all year and then starting two weeks before GD .
5. Always paint a mini you love or you will get fed up half way.
6. 40k single / WFB single are the hardest categories to win. Forget the Open its too ‘cliche-y"
7. We all have our own styles but remember GW want to show their minis off - so use a clean,
smooth, Eavy Metal painting style for GD.

1. After cleaning up the mini, sprayed with black then bone. I could go all technical about the
zenithal lighting but it was because the black tin ran out.
Keep the paint thin and built up the layers. Make sure you have a good smooth, solid layer before
you apply shade washs.
MAKE SURE THE PAINT IS DRY BETWEEN EACH STAGE.
2. Face first, I always do the face first. The thinking behind this is if I can not get the face looking
correct the rest is pointless.
