I was actually just looking at that. He's based catachan green with a thraka wash, which gave him a nice dark color. I picked up some goblin green to highlight with, so i'll experiment with that this weekend.

Thanks for the comments!

And actually, I used to consider myself a bit of a photographer, but I don't have the room or lighting in this apartment to do it properly (which in my mind involves setting up a darkroom in a closet somewhere). And let's not even get into how expensive all those chemicals and film are... I may go try to invest in a small spot-lamp and make myself a lightbox though.

I'm about ready to call this guy done. All I have left is the gun, which I kitbashed (in the truest of ork traditions) tonight. The missile will obviously be yellow, as everyone knows dat da yellow wuns are explodier!

And yes, I know it doesn't make sense, but I wanted an exhaust pipe on this thing. Ork weapons work off of sheer force of will anyway. According to the fluff, Adeptus Mechanicus once opened up an ork bolter and found just an empty box full of unexpended shells. Sheer ork belief made it fire. How's that for waaagh?

Anyway, had some fun experimenting with stark edge highlights on the arm, and with skin highlights on the ork. All in all, pretty pleased with it.

Also, because I felt like doing something a little different, I got a coat of paint on my Wolfen (see CFWheeler's Rackham WIP thread for that) and a test figure for my Scyrah Battlemage (PP's Warmachine):

This is obviously just a first coat. I wanted a very heavy purple wash because I want to try experimenting with some OSL. I'm not holding my breath, but it should be a learning experience nonetheless.

I'm bouncing between projects like a moose on crack here, but I finally picked up a few minis to start the army that got me interested in 40k. My first real love was the Eldar. Unfortunately, I got talked out of it because of the steep learning curve and old Codex. Nonetheless, I intend to put together a small (500 points) Saim-Hann army. Jetbike slide, baby!

Got a base of paint down. Man, these bikes are surprisingly tough to get looking good. I'm thinking a white basecoat may serve me better on the next few.

At 500 points, I'll have a wave serpent carrying 5 dire avengers, 6 regular bikes (one with a weapon upgrade), and a farseer on a bike. That last bit is giving me an issue, I'm not quite sure how to do it since GW doesn't put out a model. I guess I'll go grab the autarch model (ugly though it is) and try to cram eldrad's head on top of it? Going to work on everything else first.

How the heck do you highlight curvy Eldar vehicles???

Thank you Cheelfy! Glad you like it.

More progress on my Jetbike. Not much else to do over christmas break.

Rider still needs work and I need to add a few little things (green gem lights), but I'm incredibly pleased with how the bike came out. This is my first time messing with transfers, since I was doubting my ability to freehand the cosmic serpent, and it worked exactly the way I wanted it to. The little infinity symbol on the bike's "windshield" was freehanded, but that's about as far as I can go. Still, as a first test model for a new army, I'm pretty happy.

not bad. the black looks a little thick though. it's also a little wavey. if you want a straight line like that and your hands aren't that steady (like mine)i would suggest using masking tape. wait till the paint is dry before removing the tape though or it can make a mess

Yeah, I figured that out about halfway through Freak. Dunno about tape though, won't that pull up the paint already down? I was just going to use index card to try to get a straight line on the next one. I'm happy with the color scheme though (after doing a little line highlighting) and with my ability to use transfers.

Err...someone give me some ideas on that pennant they all have. Do they make it out of paper?

Nice stuff:) An eldar jetbike was the very first thing I bought from GW:D I think I was 12. Noo... Maybe I bought a titan before that, for Epic. A red one that looked like a bunch of houses stacked on each other, awesome stuff:D

nope thats the whole point of masking tape. it's sticky enough to hold on but not enough to tear the paint off (unless its not completely dry when you stick it on)

One more small update. After a few attempts to model a different gun from the bits unhand (unsuccessful) I returned to the original one. With some paint, it actually became a decent piece, though it remains to be seen how it interacts with the model as a whole (gun's in ohio, ork's in kansas).

The gun was painted after remembering one of the first discussions of 40k lore I had with the guy who's eventually getting this ork. He was telling me that even though nobody actually paints them this way, Holy Bolters SHOULD be red since that's how the Adeptus Mechanicus does it. And you don't screw with guys that cram more arms on their back than Doc Ock.

So. Red Holy Bolter it is. With attached bits. And a bigger magazine for more Dakka. And a missle launcher cuz....well more dakka. And boom. And of course the missle has some nice yellow painted on it. It explodes bigger. And a chainsaw bayonet.

For the WYSIWYG guys, I had to model both shooty and assaulty in one hand, since the other is kind of taken up holding the waaagh banner. Hence the chainsaw.

Sorry for the incoherent nature of this message. I've been painting for 8 hours and I'm very tired.

On looking at these pictures, I see that the checkerboard bit ran some, so I'll clean that up sometime tomorrow. It's not supposed to be pristine though.

Granddad!
stick the tape on your jeans or sweater(not wool) that will take some of the stickiness away, or rub your thumb down it
You can also get some low tack masking tape, but it's a tad more expensive

If you are going to use masking tape it would be worth getting the blue coloured painters masking tape. It is much less sticky than the normal white stuff you can get. You can pick it up at DIY stores.

I'll be out near a Hobby Lobby today. I'll take a look.

Random questions: My girlfriend gave me Baharroth (Swooping Hawk Phoenix Lord. If you don't know what that is, it's an Eldar with wings) for my birthday a while back. If I try to use cotton on the base to make it look like he's soaring above clouds, would that be believable? Anyone know how to do that effectively?

Today I put together three more bikes and a Wave Serpent. I am really not looking forward to painting that thing.

Very serious question: Does anyone know a good red primer that matches GW's Blood Red?

Also got a first coat on the Baharroth model that my girlfriend gave me a few months ago for my birthday. Even though the Swooping Hawks kind of suck gamewise, they have some of the most fun and dynamic models (excluding the Harlies) in the Eldar army. This guy was a bitch to get pinned to his base too.

I thought about doing a big scenic base, but the gf voted for a nice simple one to keep focus on the figure. So be it.

I'm not certain how this one is going to turn out. At the moment, I have base colors down: black primer, royal blue for the armor bits and bone on anything that's going to be light or white. I want to take what I've learned about armor highlighting over the past few models and really focus on doing it well and right on this guy; not taking any shortcuts.

Because I felt like it was funny enough to be worth sharing, I taught my little sister to play. She chose most of the terrain.

Here are my Dire Avengers holed up in a Littlest Pet Shop "Ruins":

And the final turn of the game, tank shock and jetbike last-minute objective contest at the LPS vetrinary thing:

Yeah. I've reached a new low.
