Games Workshop New Paint Range

Got a peak at GW's new range of paints on their Chinese Kaixin blog. Lots of new colors here. Still leagues behind other companies paint ranges but better than in the past at least.

What do you guys think about these new colors and the fact that the existing paint range as it stands has been completely renamed?

Honestly, I could care less. GW paint will still be more expensive for less volume and they did nothing to fix their paint pot design. Unless thay have a color I just absolutely have to have, I'll be sticking with the brands I use now.

Going to wait until I get my WD to actually see what the actual changes are - looking forward to seeing them I'll be honest. Not sure what you mean by leagues behind other companies?

I won't, however, be charging out and buying the full range :D

This is the bit I think is just stupid on their part, but heck, not the first one of their decisions I thought that of and it sure won't be the last.

it's also better paint. i just bought 10 pots of GW off CMON for 39 bucks including shipping. it's really not bad at all IMO. better quality is usually more expensive. as for the paint pot design, those new little pots seem decent enough to me? iv had paints sitting around for a year + and they are no where near dried.

i have painted a model from start to finish using VGC - i was less than impressed. i dont think i would ever score over a 6 without GW.

Matter of opinion and personal preference. What is not opinion is that I get more paint for less money in bottles that I like, from Reaper and Vallejo than I do from GW.

yes matter of opinion, use whatever works for you.

and ya it's more expensive, but so are good brushes. IMO when you cut costs you will usually either reduce quality or reduce your speed. anyway, i love vallejo inks and a few others things from their range.

back on topic, any idea what new colours they are adding?

i found the list. interesting. i agree with einion thats it's pretty annoying how they renamed everything. hopefully they dont slightly change everything too - i like the current paints the way they are.

it seems they have added a lot of new blues, greens and browns. im not too interested in anything except for the yellow and orange washes could look cool. also the new glazes might be useful

I use paints from several ranges, a sort of pick and mix really. I dont have any VGC, only VMC and the airbrush range. And looove those. Have some p3 paints that are also good, the bottles are also good and they have some interesting colors. I have the flesh and the blue paint set from Andrea Miniatures, and they are really good aswell.

So only thinking that 1 brand is the best and others are crud, might not be the best solution.

It will be interesting to see the new gw paints not atleast the high prices they will charge for them.

I am curious if they did the R&D and their glazes are something new, or if it is Liquitex (or another brand) repackaged under the Citadel name.
Citadel already had their own glazes a decade or so ago. Red, yellow, blue, green, turquoise and purple. I still have the full set.

on saturday I could try some of the paints (essentially those that come with the HE paint-set).

Those I liked:
The "base" were covering really good, and smooth. The base-white will be a favorite for a lot of people (better white on black, than P3's paints, 2 diluted coat and it was perfectly white.
"layer" colors: they are nice, essentially the current paints, but more shades. The 3 blues that were in the set were really close together, so even without mixing or blending they did a pretty good transition
"shades": will be hit-n-miss. The crimson, that was in the set is a LOT darker than the current baal-red-wash, but is a really nice color and does what it should (shade), ohh, and the terrible smell of the washes are gone.

Where I didn't get the point:
"dry": I don't really see the point in these, they were like a thick paste, so I can imagine they'll dry in the bottle pretty fast. Then again, for players, who hate to paint they can come handy
"texture": again for players, who can now do the basing in 1 step, it could be helpful, but... even if someone is not a painter a home-mix of water-pva-sand-color is a better solution
"glaze": the 4 available colors are too vibrant. Think like: fluo-green (this was in the set), fluo-yellow, etc. So not really good for me, too little colors, too vibrant. I'll stick with normal paints diluted enough

That I couldn't try:
I wanted to see how their medium behaves, and what's the need for the brush-on-(almost)black-primer (in theory the spray / base-black should do the same thing). But there weren't any, so no idea here. The earlier release liquid GS is a usable and good thing (even is it's essentially the same as Vallejo-plastic-putty in green)

And for me the most important thing in theese paints: I found about 20 colors, that are really good shades and would be a pain to mix.

Some of them not available in any other paintline (not even in the 200+ VMC), so new shades with stupid colors for everyone :D

shame that they changed the washes. what a dumb move. if it's not broken dont fix it. what is hit and miss about them?

i dont think a stronger/darker colour is a good thing. the old washes were somewhat subtle which is what made them nice. they also saved time.

the dry and texture i see as gimmicks geared towards the 10-14 yearold crowd. maybe one brown texture paint might be an ok purchase if you need to put some mud on tank tracks. can't really see any other point to it.

I tried and i liked! especially the new pot design that had 3 lid settings 1 closed, 2 half open, 3 fully open. a funny clip design on the back of the pot enabled it.

i liked the glazes lots.

tried them briefly yesterday - seemed good. does anyone know where these new paints are made i forgot to check? the last ones say made in france.

my only complaint so far is that their conversion chart seems to be way way off on some colours. the mephiston red looks more like red gore not mechrite.

The new paints are the biz, I have tried them at my local and I am happy with the results. There doesnt appear to be a exact mechrite red but I liked the mephiston red and it's richness and think it will transition better to Blood Red (or whatever the new equivilent is) than Mechrite ever could. I was told the change in name had to do with an IP stuff up with coat d'arms that resulted in Coat d'arms actually owning all the names and mix ratios to every single citadel paint in the range. paints that GW developed and promote and sell. GW didn't want it being held over their heads at some future stage or something like that. If you are concerned about volume for $ instead of quality then get a tube of poster paint haters.
