New Style White Dwarf

Hey everyone, some really great points about GW, my apologies if i caused upset to some...
It is nice to hear SOME positives and love for GW, I guess my real point was about the fact that there NEVER seems to be anything good or positive said about them, and I think the balance needed correcting.
I do agree with a lot of things said here, I know they have become overly expensive and there direction seems to be money driven, and (to me) they have become focused on aiming there product at game players. This does sadden me, but feel that steps are being taken to correct this. I, like so many, long for the WD to be focused on ALL aspects of the hobby, I don't play the games myself, but am more than happy to read even amounts about all aspects.
I think the big problem that GW has is being a victim of its own success...Anyone who knows anything about business will clearly see that once a company grows and becomes a big concern (which all of us have contributed too for buying thier product for so many years) that non-interested (i.e. non gamer types/beardy's) will be running the company and the direction of the company is then driven by market success and maintaining growth...But, I do believe there are really good people in GW that are trying to keep the ship on track.
I was priviledged enough to have a great chat with Allan Merrit last week and was enthused by his passion and desire for miniatures and there are plenty others in the organisasion that are the same. So, I think it is only a matter of time before they improve.
I would have to say though, that in their defence, as a miniature painter only, that I think their minis have really improved over the last couple of years, they have top class sculpters now and they are producing some great 'dynamic' miniatures (not the bog standard rank and file), and their plastic kits are superb, I particularly love the individual plastics.
And, in reply to someones comments about finecast, I know it has had some problems, but I (personally) will sooner clean and convert and work with a resin mini over a metal one any day of the week, yes, there are some air bubbles and miscasts, but I have always been able to take them back and get an exchange, so no big deal to me (I know this is a problem for mail order). I have plenty of metal minis in the past with casting defects, and they are a real pain to put right...So, as for me, a fan of Finecast, even if not to everyones taste..

I have been told that the new WD is around 160 pages, big glossy thicker paper, with much more on hobby/painting stuff, but will be 5 cents more....

I can say i did not get started in the hobby due to GW. I got started in D&D, but found when i went to conventions that i was more intrigued by tabletop minis. Which consisted mainly of napoleonics and various mediocre fantasy systems. My first minis were a boxed set of Grenadier dwarfs. I had purchased a few Citadel minis as they became available later on in my mini career as their quality seemed above most others available. At about this time the quality of Dragon magazine seemed to be going in the toilet and an occasional issue of White Dwarf became available and it slowly morphed into a source of awesome painted inspiration. Then rouge trader came out...wow a decent rule set with a cool back story for scifi. I followed GW for several years, but became frusteated with rules that made my armies obsolete faster than i could paint them. I let my White Dwarf subscription expire due to life not leaving me enough time to enjoy it. I did pick up an copy a couple times a year and noticed the quality heading the same direction as Dragon. I continued to buy minis to paint ( with the dream of gaming again some day) and some GW fluff. I enjoyed most of the black library fantasy stuff and picked some of the new army books which i enjoyed reading. At the same time i was becoming frustrated with the price increases that were outpacing the competition--and i was exposed to Reaper which i felt had similar quality (and better undead at the time) so i started switching. After being out of the hobby for awhile i came back and started seeing all the new option (thanks cmon) and can not understand why anyone would be fanatical about GW only.

So that is a long winded way of saying, i am not a GW hater but due to there marking practices...i am also not a significant supporter of theirs. Which is unfortunate for them as i now have the financial means to purchase more than i did back in the day. Oh well, their loss.

And i do hope there idea guys are able to keep GW successful as it allows all the other players to be successful.

It is easy to gain that superficial impression, but actually in threads that include a lot of GW-bashing there is nearly always support for them and they are rightly deserving of praise for the things they do well - their plastics have many fans and their improvements in this area have certainly not gone unnoticed.

Some of the latest plastics are really awesome... which makes the contrast with Failcast all the more stark!

The product is just shite, and overpriced shite to boot. Even if it were perfectly cast as a rule, with a low flaw/failure rate I'd still consider it overpriced, but that's obviously something where individual mileage varies. But there's no getting away from how crap the implementation is and there's an understandable amount of grief handed out as a result.

But, I do believe there are really good people in GW that are trying to keep the ship on track.
In fairness, what matters is what they do, not the good intentions or high hopes of some (even many) of the employees.

Come on by any reasonable standard "some problems" is the understatement of the decade :male-fighter1: I'm a huge resin fan, nearly a total convert from white metal, and I honestly wouldn't touch it with yours unless I had no choice.

Saying "some air bubbles and miscasts" doesn't even begin to cover it - seen and read enough first-hand reports to get a sense of the magnitude of the problem; and magnitude is the right word because sometimes the problem casts outnumber the good ones, which is just unacceptable. That fact alone is a shocking condemnation, but that they haven't gotten a handle on it even yet is much worse.

Not intending to be either Insulting or Patronising but you should see the resin quality on 1/6th scale busts at the moment.
Detail to make a Painter Cry with joy and 99% of the time quality so good as to be able to just wash, prime and go.
My copy of this (below) has absolutely NO flaws, I'm just 'terrified' of starting it.

To get back onto the topic of White Dwarf, I picked up a copy today. First time I've bought it in years. First impressions - one of the ugliest looking magazines I've ever seen. It looks like its been laid out by a retarded work experience boy. Really is impressively bad and so lacking in visual stimulation. If I had to pick a word to describe the new White Dwarf that word would be red. If you look inside I'm sure you'll see why. Seriously has no atmosphere or gravitas. Not sure if they've tried to simplify the design intentionally or it's down to lack of resource but... Yuck!

Haven't read much yet but doesn't seem terribly revelatory to me from a scan.

Bought the digital version since it was cheaper.

Long story short, still rubbish.

Nee releases section is 48 pages long, a third of the mag :S

Soooo...it's already been said but I picked up a copy of the new white dwarf yesterday......... /facepalm. What a joke. Nearly half the magazine is new releases from GW and forgeworld. The brief painting article segment was as rubish and simplified as humanly possibly, etc. etc. There was absolutely nothing new and to boot the photography was all washed out in red, bloody stupid effect. Really dissapointed. I was further upset by the fact that my local GW had no open copy and the new white dwarf comes sealed so I actually had to buy a copy to find out how shite it was.

I flicked through a friends and I would say it looked better, but i still wouldnt buy it. I dont want to read to much personally, I want to see art, great minis and great tutorials/articles and intereviews. Seemed like there were less crappy battle reports. But no way would I pay £5.50 for it. I will stick with my original plan of checking out Ravage....

I am hoping the red is just a chaos thing. This issue was a big launch one so hopping the catalog section gets smaller. I pic up a copy every once in a while if I see something cool for my army. So like one issue a year lol. As a subscription I still don't see that happening. Just seems like they said hey we listened and just did what ever they wanted to do anyway.

Mine arrived Saturday and I've flicked through it (whilst I was having a coffee pause from my entry), overall I'm more impressed with the content. Yes it does contain a bucket load of 'new release' stuff as you'd expect, our magazine's at work contain quite a bit of self promotion too. However the amount of reading material has increased by a huge portion - this in itself is a step in the right direction. My other half has read through it more and her comments were similar.

I'm hoping that this issue was only the start of changes and as the months progress we'll get more in the way of articles that the hobby community want to see. I was really surprised yesterday at Games Day at the overall age demographic - it appears to have increased! There were a lot less young children, around the same number of teens but more adults (to my untrained eye). What this hopefully means is that the 'community' will have more of a voice to say "this is what we want to see".

Judging a games demographic from one expensive convention isnt really scientific is it?

But WD is heading in the right direction, only way it could go really.

Lol, no, not at all! I've been to every Games Day in the past 8 years excluding one and I felt it was really noticeable at the decrease of children and increase of adults. I know it's not a particularly create snap shot, nor particularly accurate, but I thought it was positive :)
