Bailey03's WIP

It's been a few weeks since I've been able to do much painting. In one of my less coordinated moments I managed to slam the office door on my thumb. Not fun. But it's finally healed enough to hold a brush and exercise a bit of control so it's back to work on the goalie. I finished up the pants, did a little more on the main logo, and then started working on the pads.

I also took a look at his stick and figured instead of painting it to look like it was taped up, why not just actually tape it up. So I cut a long thin strip of tape and got to work.

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to do the base. I've cut and painted a piece of plasticard so it matches the markings around the goal. I'm thinking I'll put a layer of still water over it to look like the ice. The question is should I mix in a little white paint so it's not too clear or just sand it after it's dry to give it that skated on look? Any thoughts?

Oh, that's nice! You managed to keep your OSL bright, but subtle and diffused at the same time. It's a very good start.

Doofus!

Both.
Although its been a very(!) long time since I went ice skating what I remember of the ice, other then the large number of close contacts, was how rough it was in places.

Hi Bailey! Wow! You've got some really, really nice stuff going on. Love the hockey player and I don't even like hockey (bad, Kath! Hey, I'm from the south, ice is a difficult concept for me). Although, when you get back to painting those wings I've got some notes that might help you out if you're willing to try pigments - metallics that is - I gotta dig up my pics of the griffon wings for ya, if you want to see them.

Ice for the base, I have some notes for that as well...before the novel publishing jumped up and got in the way, I had a thread here where I did experiments with less expensive options to things like Water Effects, especially with snow and ice. I also made an ice base for previously mentioned griffon.

I made it with cork and I know many folks in the hobby have declared cork a four letter word. ;) That's because many times folks don't bother to disguise it - so the base looks like cheap, crappy, cork. But it doesn't take much to make a fantastic base and people don't know it started out as crap...uh...I mean cork. ;) If ya want I can dig up those pics too.

One of the things that might come in handy for you is the clear plastic from the blister packs. Save those.

Great job, m'dear! Can't wait to see more. I know your fiance is going to love the hockey player.

Hey Kathryn, thanks! And don't worry, I'm more of a baseball fan anyway. :p Yeah, send me the wing and ice info if you don't mind. I've just bought some pigments, but I'll have to look for some metallic ones. Always up for learning something new. And I don't mind using cork, that's what I used to make the base for my cairn wraith and the white speaker.

Cool! Okay, metallic pigments - I get Jacquard Pearl Ex. You can find those on www.dickblick.com if you don't have a Michaels or Hobby Lobby near you. And if you go to Dick Blick, grab the Colour Shapers - the minis are the size you want. Get both the firm and x-tra firm. Trying to apply powdered metallic pigment with a brush results in a glittery dust explosion. These allow controlled application.

I also used a controlled application of Reaper Gray Liner and a black wash to pick out the details.

I have a video on the metallics on my youtube channel that should get you started.

Here's the cork base I did.

Sorry for the WIP pics.

I first sealed the cork with brush on sealer so it wouldn't leak then painted my water color for a base. I applied the trimmed plastic blisters over that then built up the resin "water effects". I purchased the expensive Woodland Scenics winter kit but realized the stuff they had me using was stuff I already had around the house. Mop and Glo floor polish works great as water - apply it just like the water effects in thin layers, allowing each one to cure for 24 hours.

Since you're doing a hockey ring, you won't need all the snow build up but the snow base is actually Heavy Carvable Modelling Paste I got at Hobby Lobby.

The ice is actually the only product I purchased that I can't easily replicate - the crushed glass package from Secret Weapon. Although it's mixed with Woodland Scenics Realistic Water, which I replicated with the Mop and Glo (the floor polish is acrylic resin which is the same thing as the Realistic Water).

In that Woodland Scenics kit is also stuff called Water Effects that you can use to make icicles and stuff like that.

I replicated that with this:

Here's a pic of the test I did to make sure.

DSCF1118.jpg

I used an old nonstick cake pan - much easier! Allow to dry and it will dry clear, peel off and use more of the heavy gel to "glue" it in place. If you don't use a nonstick surface it will rip when you peel it off and the wax paper they included was crap, the old cake pan made it sooo much easier. I think Sproket's thread has photos of stuff he tested for actual snow or ice bits but I like the crushed glass the best - YMMV. ;)

And you won't need the calcite crystals I used either. lol! But that's basically it - it's all about building it up in layers to get the effect you want. As long as you are patient and don't rush it, you should be good to go.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Kathyrn. It was fun, nice to have some company while I painted.

Trystan, no, it wasn't the official pigments class hangout. Kathryn is part of a group that does google hangouts often to paint, talk painting, etc. You should join in sometime!

aww it was tonight? boo.

No, you're good hun. It will be on the 22nd. I'm going to go post an announcement on that in a bit. David just joined in with the regular gang I chat with every night.

Shoot, Bailey, I've been trying to get Trys to join us ever since I started attending the hangouts. lol!

Cool! I hope you can stop in. Like I said we get together almost every night. Also don't be surprised if some other folks add you and invite you to chats as well. So jump in whenever you see the notice. We love having you.

Well, I've finally finished the goalie. The writing on the pads turned out not to be quite as hard as I thought. But writing 'EVOLUTION' in tiny letters 6 different places did take a lot of concentration. I tried my best to match the font styles for the KOHO pads and the Sher-Wood stick... maybe not quite as closely as I'd like, but short of getting a stencil it's the best I was able to do. Overall I'm very pleased (and relieved) with how he turned out. I might still make one or two small tweaks so I'll wait another few days before uploading him to the main gallery. I hope you all like the end result. Now I'm looking forward to getting back to some sci-fi and fantasy figures. :)

Thanks, Marjedi, Skel, and Milosh. I definitely put a lot of time into this one. I'm glad it paid off! :)

Hockey dude looks awesome! One thing that would really seal the deal for me is if you could add a little spray of ice coming up from the front foot where the blade is hitting the ice. just my 2 cents.
